Flight Risk By Cara Putnam

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Bestselling author Cara Putman returns with a romantic legal thriller that will challenge the assumptions of truth tellers everywhere.
Savannah Daniels has worked hard to build her law practice, to surround herself with good friends, and to be the loyal aunt her troubled niece can always count on. But since her ex-husband’s betrayal, she has trouble trusting anyone.
Jett Glover’s father committed suicide over a false newspaper report that ruined his reputation. Now a fierce champion of truth, Jett is writing the story of his journalism career—an international sex-trafficking exposé that will bring down a celebrity baseball player and the men closest to him, including Savannah’s ex-husband.
When Jett’s story breaks, tragedy ensues. Then a commercial airline crashes, and one of Savannah’s clients is implicated in the crash. Men connected to the scandal, including her ex, begin to die amid mysterious circumstances, and Savannah’s niece becomes an unwitting target.
Against their better instincts, Jett and Savannah join ranks to sort the facts from fiction. But can Savannah trust the reporter who threw her life into chaos? And can Jett face the possibility that he’s made the biggest mistake of his life?

My Thoughts:

Flight Risk is the latest book by Cara Putnam and it is a fantastic book. I have had the pleasure of reading books by Cara Putnam so when this opportunity came to read it, I was excited.  Flight Risk is a Christian Mystery, Suspense, and Legal Thriller. I absolutely love Legal Thrillers and this one is one of the best I have read.  Cara Putnam writes with authority about the law, journalism especially being a reporter, and scandal.  I found this book a fast moving, heart pounding thriller that I could not put down. Once I started it, I found myself unable to tear myself away. The characters in this book are very real and relatable. I found myself drawn to Savannah Daniels. I found her strength and commitment to everything she does admirable. I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what Cara Putnam comes up with next. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Mystery, Suspense, and/or Legal Thriller, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 5 STARS.

Turning Tide: Legacy of Sunset Cove Book 4 By Melody Carlson

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description
As the Great War rages on, Sunset Cove continues to feel its impact. Running the small town newspaper, Anna McDowell can't escape the grim reports from the other side of the world, but home-front challenges abound as well. Dr. Daniel is serving the wounded on the front lines. And Katy, expecting her first child, with her husband in the trenches, tries to support the war effort with her Red Cross club. Even as the war winds down the costs are high--and Sunset Cove is not spared.

 My Thoughts:

Turning Tide is the fourth and final book in Melody Carlson's series, Legacy of Sunset Cove, and it is fantastic. I am a big fan of Melody Carlson and Christian Historical Fiction so I was excited to have this opportunity. Melody Carlson is very inclusive in her writing and so this book can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend reading all of the books in this series. Melody Carlson weaves a beautifully written story about our world especially Sunset Cove, Oregon, The Great War, writing and printing newspaper, and how the truth can effect those around you. Besides war, this time in our world they were dealing with Spanish Flu, which really hit home given our pandemic of Covid 19.
I love reading Historical Fiction and this story really taught me more about our world during The Great War.  In this book Melody Carlson seems to wrap up loose ends with all the characters in this series. I found all of the characters in this book to be very real dealing with real life issues, my favorite character is Anna McDowell. Anna demonstrates such strength and faith in God I find so admirable and an example for me. I truly enjoyed this book and this author. I highly recommend this book, series, and author to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I can't wait to read more from Melody Carlson. I give this book 5 STARS.

I would also like to apologize to Melody Carlson and Celebrate Lit for not getting this review done on time.

Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. Writing about the WW1 era has definitely been a good history lesson for me. Prohibition laws in Oregon (and rum-runners breaking them) combined with a massive war that changed the world and a global epidemic is worth paying attention to. Especially since history sometimes repeats itself. The early 20th century had a lot going on—much that seems nearly forgotten. I’m glad to see the movie 1917 is doing well—and we plan to see it this week. Although I’m not a fan of gruesome war movies, this era continues to intrigue me. Even as I wrapped up my Sunset Cove series with Turning Tide I was left wondering . . . what’s next? But isn’t that the beauty of story?

The Fifth Avenue Story Society By Rachel Hauck

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

An invitation to join The Fifth Avenue Story Society gives five New York strangers a chance to rewrite their own stories.

Executive assistant Lexa is eager for a much-deserved promotion, but her boss is determined to keep her underemployed.

Literature professor Jett is dealing with a broken heart, as well as a nagging suspicion his literary idol, Gordon Phipps Roth, might be a fraud.

Uber driver Chuck just wants a second chance with his kids.

Aging widower Ed is eager to write the true story of his incredible marriage.

Coral, queen of the cosmetics industry, has broken her engagement and is on the verge of losing her great grandmother’s multimillion-dollar empire.

When all five New Yorkers receive an anonymous, mysterious invitation to the Fifth Avenue Story Society, they suspect they’re victims of a practical joke. No one knows who sent the invitations or why. No one has heard of the literary society. And no one is prepared to bear their deepest secrets to a roomful of strangers.

Yet curiosity and loneliness bring them back week after week to the old library. And it’s there they discover the stories of their hearts, and the kind of friendship and love that heals their souls.

My Thoughts:

The Fifth Avenue Story Society is the latest book by Rachel Hauck and I absolutely loved it. I am a huge fan of Rachel Haucks and of course books so it was a match made in Heaven. Rachel Hauck is one of my must read authors.  This book is beautifully written. Rachel Hauck writes with authority about books, writing them, New York, historic buildings in New York, and about people from all walks of life. This story is about 5 different people who receive an invitation to The Fifth Avenue Story Society from an anonymous person.  Each week they grow closer together and seem to get together as a time of fellowship and friendship. I found all of the characters in this story to be real people dealing with real life things we all face. I found myself drawn to Coral. Coral was born into the multimillion-dollar life, having to figure out her next steps in life. She struggles with so many things that are the same things all people deal with. I could not put this book down. I was drawn to this book from cover to cover. I cannot say enough good about this story and this author.  I highly recommend this book and author to anyone who likes to read Contemporary Christian Stories, you will not be disappointed.  I give this book 5 STARS.

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and Our Daily Bread for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book.  The opinions expressed here are my own.

‘Feels Like Home’ Winter Recipes

As the weather turns colder, it becomes the time to pull out those tried and true winter-time recipes. You know, the ones that make us (or even keep us) warm on the inside. This is the time for the food that just feels like home.
Kirsten Holmberg and Elisa Morgan from the God Hears Her blog have shared some of their families personal recipes. These are the ones that are good for everyone. Feel free to try them yourself, bookmark them for later, or share them with a friend.
Kirsten Holmberg
In the winter, I’m partial to any slow-cooker soup or stew because I love coming home to it in the evening.
My favorite is a Vegetarian Chili with some Italian influences:
2 bell peppers, diced
2 stalks of celery, sliced
2 lb zucchini halved and sliced
1 lb fresh mushrooms, halved
1 large onion, diced
3 cans diced tomatoes (fire roasted or herbed for the most flavor)
1 can tomato sauce
1 small can black olives, sliced (or fresh in any amount desired)
1 can cannellini beans
2.5 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon fresh garlic, minced
½ cup water
Toss it all in a slow cooker for a few hours on high, or all day on low. Or, put it on the stove instead and simmer until the veggies are cooked through and the flavors blended (about 45 minutes). Parmesan cheese on top for an extra zing.
Elisa Morgan
A Cranberry Nut Bread recipe handed down by my mom, Paige Lee
2 cup flour
½ tsp salt
1 ¼ tsp baking powder
½ scant tsp baking soda
1 cup sugar
Sift above ingredients together twice. To the juice and grated rind of 1 large orange, add 2 tbs of melted shortening and enough boiling water to make ¾ cup. Mix with dry ingredients and add…
1 beaten egg
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup halved fresh cranberries
Bake in greased loaf pan for 75 minutes at 350 degrees.
If you double the recipe, bake a little less time and use 3 loaf pans. It also makes good muffins and can be frozen.

Legion: Rediscovering the God Who Rescues Me (Bible Study) (Behind the Scene: Exploring the Bible's Unsung Heroes) By Shadia Hrichi

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogging Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

How far will Jesus go to rescue one lost soul? Tormented, chained, and living in a graveyard, the man known only by the name of the demons that tormented him had no one to help him no one to intercede for him. So Jesus goes Himself. Through this six-week, action-packed bible study, you will experience God's relentless love as you celebrate your impassioned Savior Who moved heaven and earth to rescue you.

Shadia combines brilliant biblical insights with thought-provoking applications as she unfolds the stirring story of the man known as Legion. Though one of the more obscure individuals to experience Christ's powerful rescuing love, this man's life is destined to become a much-loved Bible story as Shadia leads you into his broken world. I highly recommend this stunning, thorough, unforgettable, hope-filled Bible study experience.

My Thoughts:

Legion is the latest Bible Study in Shadia Hrichi's series, Behind the Seen: Exploring the Bible's Unsung Heroes, and it is a fantastic read. I had the pleasure of reading the first book, Hagar, so when this opportunity came to read Legion I took it. I absolutely love these Bible Studies. Shadia Hrichi's writing puts you right there with Jesus and the other people, feeling the emotions and love for others. She really enforces the fact that God loves every single one of us and the lengths He will go to for one person. This study centers around a man named Legion, whose story isn't one that is one of the main stories. Shadia Hrichi truly writes a unique study that really touched me and challenged me. I cannot say enough good about this study and this author. I HIGHLY recommend this study for anyone looking for a great Bible Study, you will not be disappointed.  I give this Bible Study 5+ STARS. More from Shadia

If there is one universal truth, it is that every human heart longs for paradise. A perfect world without death, pain, or sorrow. A world at peace, where each of us is secure, treasured, and loved. But the reality is that the world as we know it will never deliver; it cannot. Scripture tells us that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). As a result, you and I live in a broken world. A world that has been drifting off course ever since that slippery serpent enticed our first parents to reject God’s authority in that garden paradise so long ago. In that moment, they unwittingly handed over dominion of the earth to Satan on a silver platter. But this then begs the question. Why was God willing to risk rebellion in the Garden? And why would God allow His perfect creation to fall victim to the enemy’s schemes? And if God is good, why does He allow evil to exist? Through this six-week study, you and I will explore the answers to these questions and more as we step into the fascinating story of the man known only by the name of the demons that tormented him. To be honest, I don’t know why I am attracted to the hard stories in the Bible. The messy stories. I suspect it stems, in part, from my own broken past. I can relate much easier to the broken people. The ones who experienced times when they felt unseen, or unloved, or unwanted. At the same time, their stories captivate my heart because when God reveals what He is doing behind the seen, His power and glory are displayed in ways that make my spirit soar! So I invite you to come with me as we climb into the boat with Jesus and head into enemy territory. We will witness Jesus’s power and passion as He battles violent storms and armies of demons in order to rescue . . . one . . . lost . . . soul. Tormented, chained, and living in a graveyard, the man had no one to help him. No one to intercede for him. No one but Jesus. As a result:
  • A demoniac becomes a disciple.
  • A house of demons becomes a dwelling for the Living God.
  • The chained becomes a champion of good news.
You and I live in a world crying out for rescue. And just as Jesus was willing to cross the sea and rescue one man from the enemy’s chains, He crossed the heavens to rescue you and me from a fate even worse: eternal chains. But praise God that through His sacrifice for sin, Jesus conquered all the forces of evil and opened up the gates of paradise to all who embrace His mercy. So come with me. Let’s rediscover the God Who Rescues Me! “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” —Colossians 1:13 NASB

A Promise Child: The Promise Series Book 2 By Kathryn Spurgeon

I received this book for free from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Sibyl, from a wealthy Oklahoma banking family, marries a handsome but poor hobo from the wrong side of the tracks. The Depression rips through Sibyl’s hometown of Shawnee, Oklahoma, leaving dying stores, repossessed farms, and countless men and women out of work. Now living in poverty, she suffers the burdens of a changing world and troubled economy. Based on a true story, Sibyl Pope wants to make the world a better place. Since her youth, she has followed her papa, a respected, clever-minded banker. Interested in socialist politics and asking the hard questions of life, she struggles to find her own purpose. She does her best to listen to God, even when her father refuses to help. Life changes. A new baby, a job with the PWA, and a promise of a brighter future. Concerned for her children, she struggles to keep food on her table and love alive in her heart —for her family, her husband, and God. Many people head west to save their families. Will Sibyl and Fremont abandon Oklahoma and their hopes and dreams for the promises in California? Or will they find a way to survive in Shawnee?

My Thoughts:

A Promise Child is the second book in Kathryn Spurgeon's series, The Promise Series, and it is great. This is the first book by Kathryn Spurgeon I have had the pleasure of reading.  This book is based on true stories of her family, especially her mother and grandmother. I love reading historically accurate books because the things that I am taught through these books are details that isn't taught in history or another book. This story rings true about the stories I have heard from family about the Great Depression, ringing home about how our elders lived their whole lives, saving everything and being frugal in every aspect of life, never wanting to go through that again. I found this story very emotional and I couldn't put it down. I haven't read the first book in this series but I didn't find myself feeling like I was lost. I definitely have the first book on my TBR list and Kathryn Spurgeon is definitely on my must read list. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed.  I give this book 5+ Stars.

Sibyl Trimble does everything she can to keep her family together. Before falling in love with a handsome, penniless hobo, she lived a life of new cars, speakeasies dances, and fancy cloche hats.

Then the Great Depression hits Oklahoma. The wind blows topsoil away, hundreds of jobless men hang around town, and the economy falls apart. Even Fremont, her strong, stable husband, grows discouraged and considers leaving as they struggle to put food on the table.

When disaster strikes again, will Sibyl and Fremont move on to California or try to survive in Oklahoma? Neither option sounds promising.

Researching and writing about the 1930s has been a blast, and although it was the economically worst decade of the last century, faith, love, and life went on. It has been fun to glimpse into that historical time and find amazing and uplifting stories. Sibyl Trimble, my grandmother and the ever up-and-down, emotional but brilliant lady, did her best to create a great family environment. Seeking God, she also studied, taught, and shared about Christ in the midst of heartaches. Based on a true story, I hope this tale will inspire, uplift, and bring a touch of nostalgia to your day. The strength and courage Sibyl revealed can encourage us all and I am honored to share her tale with you.
