Priceless: A Devotional Cookbook Based on Proverbs 31 By Vickie Burns

I received this book for no charge from Celebrate Lit and the author to give my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Not feeling adored, loved, cherished, appreciated, or valued? Feel like you're overwhelmed with daily tasks and taken for granted? Priceless is just what you need! The author walks you through Proverbs 31 and shows you how God sees you: perfectly perfect, just as He created you to be. Yes, dear one, you are priceless.

Along with a daily Bible study, this book is filled with recipes offering you new ways to connect with your family and honor God's calling on your life. Whether married or single, a homemaker or working outside the home, Priceless will help bring joy to even the most mundane tasks.

If you've ever read Proverbs 31 and felt you couldn't live up to God's description of the perfect woman, fear not. You have more in common with her than you think.

My Thoughts:

Priceless: A Devotional Cookbook Based on Proverbs 31 is Vickie Burns latest devotional and it is wonderful. I enjoy Bible Studies, typically I am doing it by myself, so this was right up my alley.  The study of Proverbs 31 with recipes for meals is such a unique way to really read and understand that God sees us as perfect, it is our own perseptions that get in the way of that. The whole devotional is set up to show us who we really are and puts it all in practical terms. I found myself immersed into this devotional, loving the layout and the words of encouragement from Vickie Burns, I find her very inspiring. Priceless is definitely priceless to me. I plan on rereading this and making the recipes along side this time. I HIGHLY recommend Priceless to any woman in need of this encouragement. You will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more from Vickie Burns.
I give the book 5+ STARS.

About the Book

Front cover Priceless
Book:  Priceless
Author: Vickie Burns
Genre: Devotional/Cookbook
Release Date: November, 2019

Priceless: A Devotional Cookbook Based on Proverbs 31 is a Bible study and cookbook combined. The author, Vickie Burns, takes the reader verse by verse through Proverbs 31, showing them how precious and loved they are. At the end of each day’s study, meal suggestions and recipes are provided to fill their homes with tantalizing aromas and great food. Even young children can help with meal preparation so they learn that dinner doesn’t just magically appear on the table.

For women who’ve read Proverbs 31 and felt inadequate, like they could not possibly live up to God’s description of the perfect woman, Priceless reveals that they have more in common with her than they ever imagined.

“Today’s busy mom rarely finds time to steal a few moments of peace and quiet to spend with the Lord each day,” Vickie says. “On top of that, she most likely does not take the time to flip through endless sections of cookbooks to plan a unique evening meal. Priceless encourages women to view their tasks as God’s call to an abundant life, empowers them by providing a daily word from Proverbs 31, and eases their minds by providing a full menu for the evening meal each day.”

About the Author

Vickie Burns is passionate about showing women how to love and live the abundant life that Jesus Christ offers. Through Bible study, public speaking, and writing inspirational cookbooks, Vickie inspires women to love the Lord with all their hearts, minds, souls, and strength; to see and love themselves as Christ does—PRICELESS; and to love others through genuine hospitality. She lives in Texas with the love of her life, Todd Burns, and they have two daughters.

More from Vickie

This book, Priceless, is not my story but it was birthed from it. I was raised in a single-parent Christian home after my parents divorced. I watched my mom handle everything: cooking, cleaning, bills, homework, a full-time job, etc. I had no idea until I became a wife and mother all that she must have been through while raising three children on her own. I do know that she had a strong relationship with the Lord and that she had friends and family support. Today, I look back at my childhood with renewed respect for my mom. My husband, Todd and I did our best to raise our two girls to honor the Lord while we went to school for our master’s degrees and tried to keep our household running smoothly. I had the help of a husband and was still overwhelmed while working as a teacher, trainer, coach and administrator in public education. On top of that I was still a wife, mother, friend, sister, chef, chauffer, nurse and more. Over the years, as I have gotten to know other women, I realize that I am not alone. We all long for ways to balance work and family, cooking and cleaning, physical busyness and spiritual warfare. As my heart broke for the busy women in my life (to whom I totally relate) I longed to try and make life a little easier for all of us. I began to study God’s Word for answers. As I studied, I learned that God created us for relationship with Himself and with others. I learned that sharing our burdens with one another is His design. I found out that love should drive every word and action as we relate to others. I discovered that the crazy life that we are trying to balance is actually our ministry to our families and communities. I also realized that hospitality isn’t just something that was dreamed up by Martha Stewart. God ordained hospitality from the beginning when He created Adam and Eve in His image and placed them in the garden of Eden. God touches the heart of mankind with a piece of His own. There are examples of this throughout scripture. The biggest deposit of God’s heart within us is the gift of His Spirit. This gift is what makes genuine hospitality possible today. When we touch another person’s heart with a piece of our own, we are showing hospitality, sharing the love of Christ, and making connections that impact our world. This revelation was the birth of my ministry. I call it The Heart of Hospitality. Through my writing and speaking engagements, I share with women how to see the tasks and responsibilities of our daily lives as a calling from God. Beyond that, I help women understand that viewing their lives in this way is what Jesus meant when He said He came to give us “abundant life”. My prayer for you, as you read this book is:
  • that you will be touched with a piece of God’s heart.
  • that hospitality will come to mean something new to you.
  • that each devotion in this book exposes your pricelessness in Christ.
  • that you will know beyond the shadow of any doubt that you are rare, unique and have significant meaning to your Creator.
May God richly bless you and your household.

Wings Like A Dove By Camille Eide

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest opinion. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Can the invisible walls that separate people ever come down?

In 1933, Anna Leibowicz is convinced that the American dream that brought her Jewish family here from Poland is nothing but an illusion. Her father has vanished. Her dreams of college can’t make it past the sweat-shop door. And when she discovers to her shame and horror that she’s with child, her mother gives her little choice but to leave her family. Deciding her best course of action is to try to find her father, she strikes out…hoping against hope to somehow redeem them both.
When Anna stumbles upon a house full of orphan boys in rural Indiana who are in desperate need of a tutor, she agrees to postpone her journey. But she knows from the moment she meets their contemplative, deep-hearted caretaker, Thomas Chandler, that she doesn’t dare risk staying too long. She can’t afford to open her heart to them, to him. She can’t risk letting her secrets out.
All too soon, the townspeople realize she’s not like them and treat her with the same disdain they give the Sisters of Mercy—the nuns who help Thomas and the boys—and Samuel, the quiet colored boy Thomas has taken in. With the Klan presence in the town growing ever stronger and the danger to this family increasing the longer she stays, Anna is torn between fleeing to keep them safe…and staying to fight beside them.
Oh, that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest…

My Thoughts:

I first owe everyone an apology that my review was not posted on my day. I am so sorry I didn't have it up. I would specifically like to say sorry to Camille Eide, the author and to Celebrate Lit Blogging Program. I cannot adequately express my apology.

Wings Like A Dove is Camille Eide's latest book and it is great!! This is the first of Camille's books that I have had a chance to read and I am so glad I did. As a huge fan of Christian Historical Fiction this book was right in my wheelhouse. Camille Eide writes with authority about the United State during the 1930's, the politics, Poland, Persecution, Jewish laws/beliefs/traditions. The cover of this book is beautifully done, really captured my attention. I could not put this book down once I started it. The amount of historical facts I learned more about was amazing, This story is about the racism in 1933 and the control the KKK had in many states. This story gives an accurate picture of the US and the way people were treated for being different.  This book really spoke to about the racism and how destructive the KKK was to all people.  I really felt so many emotions as I read this book. For me I felt  angry, sad, happy, and hopeful. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical fiction, you will not be disappointed! I have definitely found a new author to keep up with. I cannot wait to read more from Camille Eide. I give this book 5 STARS.

More from Camille

If Only I Could Fly Away… “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would flee far away and stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.” -Psalm 55:6-8 What do you think of when you read this passage from Psalms? Does the idea of escape tempt you? Have you ever cried out for relief from life’s storms? In Wings Like a Dove, Anna faces growing difficulties in her life. Psalm 55:6 is brought to her attention and she ponders it more than once, especially as the difficulties in her life steadily increase. As Polish Jews in the early 1900s, Anna’s family lived in constant upheaval, so fleeing danger is nothing new to her. The problem is that Anna craves connection and community. While she was often uprooted, at least Anna enjoyed the security of family—until now. As the story begins, she is turned out of her home and must journey across the country alone, a heartache that only intensifies the persecution she faces as a Jew, an immigrant, and an unwed woman with child. But her journey is temporarily delayed out of necessity, and she quickly falls in love with those who have taken her in. The idea of leaving them is as painful a prospect as leaving her own family, but because of the troubles that follow her, it seems she has no choice. Psalm 55:6 isn’t tempting Anna to leave her surroundings; it tempts her to escape the negativity that robs her joy. For Anna, and for the rest of us, we can’t flee trouble any more than we can grow wings and fly. The desire for relief is understandable. But what if there is a purpose in the difficult situations we face? What if we are called to more than simply outlast life’s storms? What if our weakest moment is exactly what God wants to use to show his power, love, mercy, and grace? What if God is waiting for us to stop fluttering our wings and find joy in knowing that we are in the very place we need to be, for a purpose, for such a time as this? Quote from Anna: “If these past months have taught me nothing else, they have taught me that though I am only a seed blowing in the wind, I must still be fruitful wherever I land. I have learned that wherever we find ourselves, we must have the courage to stretch out roots and produce something useful, even in times of difficulty. We must bloom boldly in whatever field our seed has fallen.”  May you find the sweet spot of joy and purpose in the midst of your storm!   -Camille

Heart of a Royal (Daughters of Peverell Book 1) By Hannah Currie

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Brought to the palace as a newborn, the royal life bestowed upon Mackenna Sparrow was never meant to last forever. With Princess Alina engaged to be married, Mackenna’s presence as companion is no longer required and, like it or not, she must return to the birthright which should have been hers – that of a commoner. But not everyone at the palace wants her gone. When the truths she’s based her life on start crumbling as fast as her future, will she find the courage to trust, both herself and the prince she’s fallen in love with

My Thoughts:

Heart of a Royal is the debut book from Hannah Currie and it is wonderful. This book is the first in her Daughters of Peverell. I absolutely love reading debut books and this one did not disappoint.  I love Hannah Currie's style of writing, she has her own twist on fairy tales and within that humor and faith all mixed in. The characters in this book are well rounded and real people, my favorite is Mackenna. Her faith and perseverance is admirable. Mackenna struggles with so many things but knows she will be fine. I absolutely love the cover of this book, so royal and just beautiful!!
Heart of a Royal is categorized for Teens/Young Adults but this older reader really enjoyed it. I cannot wait to read more from Hannah Currie!! I highly recommend this book and author for anyone who enjoys Christian Fairy Tales or Royals, you will NOT be disappointed.
I give this book 5 STARS.

About the Author

Hannah currie
Aussie author, Hannah Currie, loves God, family, people (in small numbers, let’s not go crazy here!) and writing. She and her husband live with their three adorable kids in sunny Queensland, where it really is beautiful one day and perfect the next. Except, maybe, during heatwaves. They’re not so fun. She loves to connect with readers at www.hannahcurrie.com.

More from Hannah

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by royalty. Real ones like Queen Elizabeth II, who is such an incredible woman and a total hero of mine (not to mention, as a proud Australian and member of the Commonwealth, my monarch) but also the not-so-real ones. Those found in fairytales. Romances. Narnia. I’m one of those people who blocks out an entire day to watch a royal wedding, sighs like a hopeless romantic through cheesy princess movies, reads just about any novel I find with a crown on the front and loves a full-spread photo souvenir magazine. I may have even written a short story starring a princess for an English assignment at school. More than once. [Side note, if you’re going to write a story about a princess who is totally adorable but can’t spell, don’t use a misspelled word as the title. It takes a lot of explaining to make sure the teacher knows you did it on purpose and doesn’t mark you down for it… sorry Ninth Grade English teacher!]. The glamor draws me in, the beautiful clothes, the history and romance of it all, but it’s the expectations they have on them which hold me there. Every title comes with a million expectations, whether or not they’re realistic. We expect royals, both real and fictional, to behave in a certain way. To be honourable (assuming they’re the good guys). To care for their people and put them first. To always be there. Yes, even to be beautiful. But what happens when they’re not? When they’re shy? Fight anxiety? Hate the spotlight? Are blemished in some way? What happens when what’s best for the people isn’t what’s best for them? Or when they make a mistake? Something which, for anyone else, would be easily fixed or glossed over but for a royal, gets written into the history books forever. Purely because of their title. Kenna, the main character in Heart of a Royal, never meant to be a princess. She wasn’t born into royalty, neither did she choose it. And yet, due to circumstances far beyond her control, there she is. Living in a palace. Part of that life. Very few of us are royalty but I think we all know how heavy expectations can be and the pain of being thrust into situations beyond our control. And yet, even in those moments and seasons, just like Kenna, we have choices. They might seem small, maybe even insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they’re there. Who we put our trust in. What we do with the circumstances we’ve been given. Where we go from there. Heart of a Royal is as much my story as it is Kenna’s. No, I’m not a princess (thankfully!) but I have struggled through finding hope and purpose when life flies out of control and the expectations prove too much. And here’s what I’ve found – God is good. There is hope and God is good. I hope, through Kenna’s story, you are reminded of that too.

Smoke Screen By Terri Blackstock

I received this book for no charge from Celebrate Lit Blogger program and the author for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isn’t until he’s sidelined by an injury that he’s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.
Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher’s daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate’s drunken dad was loud—and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his father’s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.
Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and she’s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where he’s using lies and his family’s money to sway the judge. She’s barely hanging on, and she’s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.
As they deal with the present—including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire that’s threatening their town—their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed. But she’ll have to learn to trust him again first.

My Thoughts:

Smoke Screen is the latest book by Terri Blackstock and it is AMAZING! Terri Blackstock is one of my all time favorite authors so I was excited to read her newest book, and it did not disappoint.
Terri Blackstock writes with authority about our justice system, the U.S. especially Colorado, alcohol abuse, and imperfections.  I have always loved Terri Blackstock's style of writing, in this book she seamlessly alternates between the two main characters with complete continuity. The characters in this book are totally relatable, they are real people dealing with real issues that plague all of us. I found myself drawn to Brenna. Her life and circumstances are very relatable. I found her ability to overcome admirable.  This book grabbed a hold of me from the first page, kept me guessing until the end, and left me wanting more of the story. These are the perfect combinations for a fantastic mystery. I cannot wait to read more from Terri Blackstock! I HIGHLY recommend this book and author to anyone who enjoys Christian Mystery and Suspense, you will not be disappointed.
 I give this book 5+STARS.

Excerpt from Smoke Screen

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldn’t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face. An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. “What happened?” T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. “Nate, lie back, man.” “The fire,” I said. “Need to get back. My men.” “They’re still there. Making progress. But you’re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.” I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. “A month?” “Yep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.” It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here. “The family. Were they injured?” “Not a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says you’re a hero.” “You know I had no choice. They were in the path—” “Take the praise where you can get it, man. We don’t get that much.” I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasn’t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. I’d be able to leave the hospital soon. I’d heal. “I won’t need a month,” I said. “Yes, you will. They can’t let you go back. Doctor’s orders. You’re grounded until he releases you.” I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldn’t. “I can’t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You don’t have enough men as it is.” “Sorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why don’t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.” Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didn’t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadn’t done him any favors.   Taken from “Smoke Screen” by Terri Blackstock. Copyright © 2019 by Terri Blackstock. Deadly Christmas Pretense: Book #2 in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series By Dana Mentink

I received this book for no charge from Celebrate Lit Blogger program and the author for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

A cowboy to her rescue…but she’s not who he thinks she is.

Posing as her sister for Christmas is the only way to save her, but Maggie Lofton needs help—even if it means working with her twin’s cowboy ex-boyfriend, Liam Pike. But between the bull’s-eye on her back and the dangerous connection she’s forming with Liam, Maggie’s mission is harder than expected. Will their tenuous partnership be enough to shield her when the killer closes in?

My Thoughts:

Deadly Christmas Pretense is the latest book in Dana Mentik series,Roughwater Ranch Cowboys, and it is great. Dana Mentik is one of my favorite authors so I jumped at the opportunity to read and review this book.  This book might not be long but you cannot judge the book by its size. The pages of this book it is filled with so much action and suspense you won't believe it!! Dana Mentik writes with authority about Cowboys, ranching, Green Berets, animals especially those on ranches and dogs, of course.  I love Dana Mentink's style of writing, she puts her readers right there in the book, experiencing everything the characters do. The characters in this book are well written and very real people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. I found myself drawn to Maggie Lofton. She is brave and her faith is so admirable. I could NOT put this book down. I had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series but this book can definitely be read as a stand alone.  I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense stories, you will not be disappointed. More from Dana

I just love Christmas, don’t you? In our area we have a lovely holiday train. It’s an old steam type train which is decked out in lights for festive holiday tours. I was so thrilled that this cover features just such a train. Of course, in the novel the train is the scene of hair raising danger! Maggie, our heroine in this novel, is a cook. She serves up some mouth watering dishes (when she’s not dodging a killer.) I thought perhaps you might enjoy a Mentink holiday family recipe! God bless you as we enter this holiday season!
