Heart of a Royal (Daughters of Peverell Book 1) By Hannah Currie

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Brought to the palace as a newborn, the royal life bestowed upon Mackenna Sparrow was never meant to last forever. With Princess Alina engaged to be married, Mackenna’s presence as companion is no longer required and, like it or not, she must return to the birthright which should have been hers – that of a commoner. But not everyone at the palace wants her gone. When the truths she’s based her life on start crumbling as fast as her future, will she find the courage to trust, both herself and the prince she’s fallen in love with

My Thoughts:

Heart of a Royal is the debut book from Hannah Currie and it is wonderful. This book is the first in her Daughters of Peverell. I absolutely love reading debut books and this one did not disappoint.  I love Hannah Currie's style of writing, she has her own twist on fairy tales and within that humor and faith all mixed in. The characters in this book are well rounded and real people, my favorite is Mackenna. Her faith and perseverance is admirable. Mackenna struggles with so many things but knows she will be fine. I absolutely love the cover of this book, so royal and just beautiful!!
Heart of a Royal is categorized for Teens/Young Adults but this older reader really enjoyed it. I cannot wait to read more from Hannah Currie!! I highly recommend this book and author for anyone who enjoys Christian Fairy Tales or Royals, you will NOT be disappointed.
I give this book 5 STARS.

About the Author

Hannah currie
Aussie author, Hannah Currie, loves God, family, people (in small numbers, let’s not go crazy here!) and writing. She and her husband live with their three adorable kids in sunny Queensland, where it really is beautiful one day and perfect the next. Except, maybe, during heatwaves. They’re not so fun. She loves to connect with readers at www.hannahcurrie.com.

More from Hannah

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by royalty. Real ones like Queen Elizabeth II, who is such an incredible woman and a total hero of mine (not to mention, as a proud Australian and member of the Commonwealth, my monarch) but also the not-so-real ones. Those found in fairytales. Romances. Narnia. I’m one of those people who blocks out an entire day to watch a royal wedding, sighs like a hopeless romantic through cheesy princess movies, reads just about any novel I find with a crown on the front and loves a full-spread photo souvenir magazine. I may have even written a short story starring a princess for an English assignment at school. More than once. [Side note, if you’re going to write a story about a princess who is totally adorable but can’t spell, don’t use a misspelled word as the title. It takes a lot of explaining to make sure the teacher knows you did it on purpose and doesn’t mark you down for it… sorry Ninth Grade English teacher!]. The glamor draws me in, the beautiful clothes, the history and romance of it all, but it’s the expectations they have on them which hold me there. Every title comes with a million expectations, whether or not they’re realistic. We expect royals, both real and fictional, to behave in a certain way. To be honourable (assuming they’re the good guys). To care for their people and put them first. To always be there. Yes, even to be beautiful. But what happens when they’re not? When they’re shy? Fight anxiety? Hate the spotlight? Are blemished in some way? What happens when what’s best for the people isn’t what’s best for them? Or when they make a mistake? Something which, for anyone else, would be easily fixed or glossed over but for a royal, gets written into the history books forever. Purely because of their title. Kenna, the main character in Heart of a Royal, never meant to be a princess. She wasn’t born into royalty, neither did she choose it. And yet, due to circumstances far beyond her control, there she is. Living in a palace. Part of that life. Very few of us are royalty but I think we all know how heavy expectations can be and the pain of being thrust into situations beyond our control. And yet, even in those moments and seasons, just like Kenna, we have choices. They might seem small, maybe even insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they’re there. Who we put our trust in. What we do with the circumstances we’ve been given. Where we go from there. Heart of a Royal is as much my story as it is Kenna’s. No, I’m not a princess (thankfully!) but I have struggled through finding hope and purpose when life flies out of control and the expectations prove too much. And here’s what I’ve found – God is good. There is hope and God is good. I hope, through Kenna’s story, you are reminded of that too.

Smoke Screen By Terri Blackstock

I received this book for no charge from Celebrate Lit Blogger program and the author for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isn’t until he’s sidelined by an injury that he’s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.
Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher’s daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate’s drunken dad was loud—and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his father’s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.
Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and she’s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where he’s using lies and his family’s money to sway the judge. She’s barely hanging on, and she’s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.
As they deal with the present—including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire that’s threatening their town—their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed. But she’ll have to learn to trust him again first.

My Thoughts:

Smoke Screen is the latest book by Terri Blackstock and it is AMAZING! Terri Blackstock is one of my all time favorite authors so I was excited to read her newest book, and it did not disappoint.
Terri Blackstock writes with authority about our justice system, the U.S. especially Colorado, alcohol abuse, and imperfections.  I have always loved Terri Blackstock's style of writing, in this book she seamlessly alternates between the two main characters with complete continuity. The characters in this book are totally relatable, they are real people dealing with real issues that plague all of us. I found myself drawn to Brenna. Her life and circumstances are very relatable. I found her ability to overcome admirable.  This book grabbed a hold of me from the first page, kept me guessing until the end, and left me wanting more of the story. These are the perfect combinations for a fantastic mystery. I cannot wait to read more from Terri Blackstock! I HIGHLY recommend this book and author to anyone who enjoys Christian Mystery and Suspense, you will not be disappointed.
 I give this book 5+STARS.

Excerpt from Smoke Screen

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldn’t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face. An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. “What happened?” T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. “Nate, lie back, man.” “The fire,” I said. “Need to get back. My men.” “They’re still there. Making progress. But you’re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.” I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. “A month?” “Yep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.” It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here. “The family. Were they injured?” “Not a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says you’re a hero.” “You know I had no choice. They were in the path—” “Take the praise where you can get it, man. We don’t get that much.” I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasn’t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. I’d be able to leave the hospital soon. I’d heal. “I won’t need a month,” I said. “Yes, you will. They can’t let you go back. Doctor’s orders. You’re grounded until he releases you.” I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldn’t. “I can’t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You don’t have enough men as it is.” “Sorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why don’t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.” Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didn’t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadn’t done him any favors.   Taken from “Smoke Screen” by Terri Blackstock. Copyright © 2019 by Terri Blackstock. Deadly Christmas Pretense: Book #2 in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series By Dana Mentink

I received this book for no charge from Celebrate Lit Blogger program and the author for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

A cowboy to her rescue…but she’s not who he thinks she is.

Posing as her sister for Christmas is the only way to save her, but Maggie Lofton needs help—even if it means working with her twin’s cowboy ex-boyfriend, Liam Pike. But between the bull’s-eye on her back and the dangerous connection she’s forming with Liam, Maggie’s mission is harder than expected. Will their tenuous partnership be enough to shield her when the killer closes in?

My Thoughts:

Deadly Christmas Pretense is the latest book in Dana Mentik series,Roughwater Ranch Cowboys, and it is great. Dana Mentik is one of my favorite authors so I jumped at the opportunity to read and review this book.  This book might not be long but you cannot judge the book by its size. The pages of this book it is filled with so much action and suspense you won't believe it!! Dana Mentik writes with authority about Cowboys, ranching, Green Berets, animals especially those on ranches and dogs, of course.  I love Dana Mentink's style of writing, she puts her readers right there in the book, experiencing everything the characters do. The characters in this book are well written and very real people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. I found myself drawn to Maggie Lofton. She is brave and her faith is so admirable. I could NOT put this book down. I had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series but this book can definitely be read as a stand alone.  I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense stories, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more from Dana Mentik. I give this book 5 STARS.

I just love Christmas, don’t you? In our area we have a lovely holiday train. It’s an old steam type train which is decked out in lights for festive holiday tours. I was so thrilled that this cover features just such a train. Of course, in the novel the train is the scene of hair raising danger! Maggie, our heroine in this novel, is a cook. She serves up some mouth watering dishes (when she’s not dodging a killer.) I thought perhaps you might enjoy a Mentink holiday family recipe! God bless you as we enter this holiday season!

Mission Hollywood:A Red Carpet Romance Book 1 By Michelle Keener

I received this book for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book.  The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

A Hollywood bad boy. A pastor’s daughter.
What could possibly go wrong?

Movie star Ben Prescott arrives back in Hollywood after causing a scandal with his ex-girlfriend in Rome.
Chased through the airport by paparazzi, he jumps into a limo hoping for a quick getaway. Instead he finds Lily Shaw, a pastor’s daughter and preschool teacher. When the paparazzi capture a photo of the two of them together, Ben’s agent demands that he do whatever it takes to keep the story from hitting the gossip pages . . . even volunteer to work at Lily’s church.
Sparks fly as the movie star and the pastor’s daughter work side by side. When Lily accompanies Ben to the premiere of his latest movie, Hollywood takes notice. Under intense media scrutiny and pressure from the movie industry, Ben must risk his career to follow his heart, but Lily wants the one thing he doesn’t have, faith.

Mission Hollywood is an inspirational story about love, faith, and second chances.

My Thoughts:

Mission Hollywood is the first book in Michelle Keener's series, Red Carpet Romance, and WOW.
I have come to enjoy Christian Contemporary Fiction, and I fell in love with the book description and the cover art. Michelle Keener has fantastic style of writing, she writes about relationships and love cleanly is something not all authors have figured out. Her ability to tell a Christian's story without sounding preachy is definitely UNIQUE. Michelle Keener writes with authority about our world, California especially Hollywood, paparazzi, and being part of a church. I found the characters well written and real people. I found myself drawn to Lily Shaw. She is a strong woman with strong faith that helps her through anything that life is throwing at her. Her character traits are definitely admirable. Once I started this book, I was hooked. I could NOT put this book down. I felt like I was right there in the story with the characters going through what they are. I cannot say enough good about this book. I cannot wait to read Michelle Keener's next book in this series, coming in
February 2020. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes Clean Contemporary Fiction, you will NOT be disappointed. I give this book 5+ STARS.

More from Michelle

Why Hollywood? That’s a great question! Of all the places I could have set a Christian romance novel, why pick Hollywood? It isn’t exactly the first place that pops into your mind when you think Christian romance, right? The truth is I spent four years of my life trying to become an actress. I was a theatre major in the Los Angeles area and I spent a lot of time in Hollywood. I’ve been down Hollywood Boulevard, visited casting offices, and gone to open-call auditions. In those years, I saw the good and the bad of the movie industry. I saw dreams shattered and hearts broken under the glamourous lights of the Sunset Strip. Years later, when I started thinking about writing a Christian romance, I knew Hollywood was the perfect setting to tell the story of God’s unchanging, never-ending love for us. Mission Hollywood isn’t just one love story, it’s two. The romance between Ben and Lily is definitely swoon-worthy, but there is also the story of how much God loves us. I hope you enjoy Mission Hollywood…it’s only the beginning of the story for the Shaw Family. Book two is coming in February!

Aiming for Love: Brides of Hope Mountain Book One By Mary Connealy

I received this book for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Josephine Nordegren is one of three sisters who grew up nearly wild in southwestern Colorado. She has the archery skills of Robin Hood and the curiosity of the Little Mermaid, fascinated by but locked away from the forbidden outside world--a world she's been raised to believe killed her parents. When David Warden, a rancher, brings in a herd much too close to the girls' secret home, her older sister especially is frightened, but Jo is too interested to stay away.

David's parents follow soon on his heels, escaping bandits at their ranch. David's father is wounded and needs shelter. Josephine and her sisters have the only cabin on the mountain. Do they risk stepping into the world to help those in need? Or do they remain separated but safe in the peaks of Hope Mountain?

My Thoughts:

Aiming for Love is the first book in Mary Connealy's latest series, Brides of Hope Mountain, and it is fantastic. As a fan of Christian Historical Fiction I have had the pleasure of reading Mary Connealy's writing and I love learning from the historical facts weaved in there. I absolutely fell in love with the cover art for this book, especially the adventurous look on the model's face, which definitely the same look Josephine seems to sport throughout this book. All the characters in this book are well written and real people going through real issues. I found myself drawn to Josephine Nordegren, her adventurous spirit and brave curiosity are admirable, especially after losing her parents and being isolated on Hope Mountain. How she overcame the obstacles in front of her is admirable. Mary Connealy's style of writing made me feel that I was there in Colorado during this time , seeing all the beautiful mountains and watching the story unfold. I found myself reluctant to put this book down, leaving Hope's Mountain and all the characters. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will NOT be disappointed!! I give this book 5 STARS.

More from Mary

What it would do to someone to run wild from nearly their earliest memory? What if three young girls had the basic skills to survive a rugged life but no adults to guide them? Would they grow up to be a completely odd and untamed version of themselves, or the truest, in some ways most honest version? I wanted to explore that idea: wild children, tough young women, afraid of the invading world, but lonely, too. So I created the plot for my Brides of Hope Mountain series by mixing the three little girls who’d grown up wild on the top of a mountain with some fairy tale ideas. Book one, Aiming for Love, is Josephine Nordegren’s story. I had this vision of Ariel the mermaid seeing a man for the first time when strangers invade the high valley she lives in with only her two sisters. Curiosity is her besetting sin, or so she’s always been told. She has wilderness skills, mainly in the form of owning a bow and arrow and understanding wild animals, but for the first time, she is drawn to a man. Jo needs to be tamed, or Dave, the man she can’t stop watching from in the woods, needs to learn the ways of the wild, because they’re out of place in each other’s worlds.
