More Than She Dreamt:Rose Arbor Brides Book 1 By Sandy Faye Mauck

I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

It was more than she dreamt.  But as the romance began to bud, she felt the thorns of a heartless beauty rise to tear it apart.  Young widow, Katie Jensen, endures patiently under her oppressive uncle in desolate Arizona Territory. She tries to keep her promise to her dead aunt to be a witness and take care of her uncle but when his tirades grow worse, she gathers her two precious little ones and runs.  Making their way to an unknown land, they come to the town of White Rock, which is strangely like the place in the dreams Katie has been having. They are welcomed into the cottage of a kindly grandmother who takes in borders.  When Danny, the older woman's grandson, comes home, he finds surprises in store: a crisis, a beautiful young woman, and her adorable children who bring laughter and life into all their weary souls.  Katie is filled with hope when an unexpected romance sparks but there is a vindictive raven-haired beauty and an old enemy conspiring to put it out—permanently.  Will God give Katie rest as she and the family pray for their enemies?  Can she stand strong in her faith when fear overwhelms her?

My Thoughts:

More Than She Dreamt is the first book in Sandy Faye Mauck's newest series, The Rose Arbor Brides. More Than She Dreamt is Sandy Faye Mauck's debut book and it's amazing. Hard to believe this is her debut book. As a huge fan of debut authors and Christian Historical Fiction I was so excited to be given the opportunity to read it! Sandy Faye Mauck writes with authority about Arizona Territory in 1905,California in 1900's, United States in the early 1900's, travel during this time, ministry during this time, social classes and graces, and gardening/flowers. More Than She Dreamt is a beautiful story of finding peace from a hostile situation. I absolutely loved this story. I found I was unable to put this book down from start to finish. I loved Sandy Faye Mauck's style of writing, I really felt like I was there with The Jensen family. I absolutely loved the characters in this book especially Sarah and Jeremy. Their innocence and ability to endure were inspirational. They also provided comic relief throughout this book especially Jeremy and his processing of what people said. As I read this book I found myself laughing in many places, crying in some(happy and sad tears), and holding my breath in others. The biggest thing that stood out to me was the transformation of Katie's Uncle. His treatment of The Jensen's was horrible but long before he made his amends Katie and her children had forgiven him. As her Uncle spoke to Danny he found God, realized he needed to forgive his Dad for the treatment he received. Danny truly had a heart for ministry and it showed in everything he did. Forgiveness is a big theme throughout this book, giving forgiveness because it is the right thing to do, not because someone asked for it. To see this forgiveness even from the children was so heart warming. I really cannot do this book justice! Sandy Faye Mauck has written a wonderful book that really touched my heart. More Than She Dreamt is a book that will stay with me for quite awhile. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will NOT be disappointed. I cannot wait to read the next books in this series, Sandy Faye Mauck is a new author for my top 10 must read. I give this book 5+ STARS.

Guest Post from Sandy Faye Mauck

Hi everyone! Sandy Faye Mauck here! Today I launch my book on Celebrate Lit! They say to write the book that is missing from your bookshelf. So I did. I wrote a story that brought the purity of a Christian romance with a touch of humor and endearing characters who live what they believe, with real enemies and redemptive grace. More Than She Dreamt is set at the time just after the turn of the century. Probably my favorite time travel place if I had to choose because of the interesting changes and the lovely clothing and yet there was indoor plumbing, and lights, LOL! My greatest writing inspiration (other than my Lord), was my favorite author, Grace Livingston Hill. She could tell a story, make you feel you were there in every sense. Grace could bring romance, excitement, and enemies and then touch your heart with a truth of God’s word that would penetrate your heart. I hope to do this as I write my heart and I add humor because that is who I am. I hope you enjoy this Celebrate Lit Blog Tour and the special personal giveaway at the end!

My Father's House By Rose Chandler Johnson

I received this book from Litfuse Publicity and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Growing up, life is idyllic for Lily Rose Cates due to one constant – her father’s love.
But in her sixteenth summer, all that changes without warning. There begins Lily’s struggle to find herself and the life she’s lost. . . . Marriage promises fulfillment, but her happily-ever-after barely survives the honeymoon. Her husband’s sophisticated façade hides a brooding man with even darker secrets. When all illusions shatter, Lily must make hard choices – abandon her husband or risk losing much more than her marriage. She flees their home in Detroit and sets out on a fearful journey to a house in Georgia that her husband knows nothing about. This is one woman’s compelling tale of love and survival as she finds her way back home to who she’s meant to be . . . in her father’s house.

My Thoughts:

My Father's House is Rose Chandler Johnson's first book and it is just phenomenal. As a huge fan of debut authors I was excited to have the opportunity to read it. Rose Chandler Johnson writes with authority about Georgia past and present, Detroit, New York, writing, loss, alcoholism, domestic violence, and surviving tragedy and loss.  From the first page until the last I could NOT put this book down. This book really spoke to me and touched me in a way that doesn't happen with a lot of books. The characters in this book are complex and well written. They all have not so perfect lives, making decisions good and bad, and try finding a way to survive. I have to say I really identified with Lily Rose Cates. A woman who finds out that things are NOT what they seem. When she thinks she can't find a way out, she finds the strength through God and her friends to do what she needs to, to save her life and make a new one. I also loved Annie Ruth, she is a strong woman who had a huge part in raising Lily, she sees people for who they are and says what she thinks. Her faith in God is strong and she shares her faith with everyone. Both of these women are fantastic.  As I read Lily's story I really identified with her, her love for her Dad and his love for her and how it carried her through her life.  Having a loving father like Lily's and losing him recently I really identified with her struggle. I found myself laughing in parts, holding my breath in others, and sobbing in others. The sharing of faith, leaning on that faith in midst of unrest really gave me much to think about. This book is one that will stay with me for a long time. I wish I could do the book justice with this review. Just fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more from Rose Chandler Johnson. She is on my top list of authors. I give this book 5+ STARS.

The Seed: A True Myth By Erik Guzman

I received this book from Litfuse Publicity for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Young Madeline and Roark are desperately running from the shadow that destroyed their home and is threatening their lives. One day, they encounter Tatus, an older man who has sworn to avenge the death of his family at the hands of the shadow, and they form an alliance with him. Tatus promises that he can keep them safe from the shadow if they will help him build a fortress. So they build.
But as fortress-building consumes their lives, Madeline and Roark are increasingly filled with anger and fear, and an unseen evil threatens to ultimately destroy them. When they finally face the shadow, he presents them with an unthinkable offer that will reveal shocking secrets of the forgotten past, the unseen present, and the unimaginable future.
We've all had the feeling that something's not quite right with our lives. It's bigger than any specific failure or disappointment. It's bigger than any person. No matter what you achieve or how much you drink or sleep, you can't shake it. It haunts you-night and day-and propels you to do something. So you build. You build and build the maze that is your exhausting life. Sound vaguely familiar?
The Seed: A True Myth is a journey into the personal labyrinths we create to protect ourselves and those we love from the pain of living in a broken world. Guzman's "true myth" takes the reader on an unforgettable journey that is, in essence, the grand narrative of God's redemptive work in the world. This page-turning Christian fantasy tale is packed with mystery and drama, and readers will feel the weight and power of redemption as they journey alongside Guzman's characters in their epic battle. The Seed deftly communicates the heart of Trinitarian theology through story-without using theological language or Christian terms-and reinforces biblical themes such as God's character and man's true identity and calling.

My Thoughts:

The Seed: A True Myth is the first book from Erik Guzman I have had the pleasure of reading. The Seed is the retelling of the creation story in the bible and it is a very neat and unique retelling.  This book really leaves you thinking about redemption and our own struggles. I will admit in the beginning I had a hard time getting into the book, found myself confused by characters but once I got further into the story I got into the story. The characters are very well written and highly developed through the story. I equally enjoyed all the characters. As they faced the shadow, they had big decisions to make about their lives, between good and evil. This story really gives the reader a lot to think about, about their past and how they will decide to move forward. Erik Guzman found a unique and thought provoking way to retell this bible story that really speaks to anyone who reads it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fantasy/Myth and authors like C.S. Lewis. You will not be disappointed. I give this book 4 STARS.

The Amish Firefighter By Laura V. Hilton

I received this book from Celebrate Lit and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

A Beautiful Young Woman Banished from Home
Abigail Stutzman thought it was bad enough being dropped at the nearest bus station and sent to live several states away with some relatives she'd never heard about, much less met. But now, just a week after her arrival in Jamesport, Missouri, she finds herself at the scene of a barn fire. An intentional barn fire. And all fingers are pointed at her. She's desperate to prove her innocence and protect her reputation, but nobody's making that easy to do. And God certainly doesn't seem willing to help.

A Brave Firefighter with an Agenda of His Own
Sam Miller is in the process of turning over a new leaf. Determined to atone for the follies of his past, he is a volunteer firefighter, an EMT, and a doctor–in–training. When local barn fires escalate, everyone suspects arson. And since the Miller family are among the victims, no one is more determined to see the perpetrators brought to justice than Sam.

A Kindled Flame Neither One Could Have Anticipated
When their paths first cross, at the site of a barn burning, the emotional intensity rivals the warmth of the flames. Soon, they must decide whether this fire is one they should feed or extinguish. And they'll discover that the truth can prove more dangerous than a blazing inferno.

My Thoughts:

The Amish Firefighter is the latest book by Laura V. Hilton and it is great! This is the first book by Laura V. Hilton I have had the pleasure of reading and I am so glad I had the opportunity! As a huge fan of Amish Fiction, I could NOT pass up the chance to read and review this book. Laura V. Hilton writes with authority about the Amish, firefighting, investigating fires, EMT services and training, and medical training. The action and suspense in this book start right from the first page and keeps you guessing until the end. Laura V. Hilton weaves a story about fires starting in Amish barns and Abigail, a new girl to the area, left there to take the blame. Abigail collides with Sam Miller, an Amish man who is a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and training to be a doctor. Sam is struggling with following his calling or committing his life to the Amish. Sam finds Abigail intriguing but isn't sure if she is the fire starter. I enjoyed the characters in this book, they all had their own stories and secrets. They are real people with messy lives. I truly enjoyed Abigail. She finds herself in situations that she has no idea how to get out of, she also has secrets and people are keeping secrets from her. As she finds out things she didn't know, she struggles with how to handle them. Her faith throughout is unwavering. I found myself unable to put this book down. From start to finish this book held my interest and kept me guessing. I also learned more about the Amish including different words in the Amish language and different areas of Amish settlements. I truly enjoyed this book! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I can't wait to read more books by Laura V. Hilton. I give this book 5 STARS.

Guest Post from Laura V. Hilton

Unlike some authors, I am not a planner. I have a very vague idea of the story, of the series, and as soon as the characters step forward and introduce themselves I dive in and start writing. When I first began writing this series – New Beginnings in Jamesport – I knew Sammy Miller was going to be the hero. Readers started asking for Sammy’s story as soon as they read The Postcard where Sammy was the villain. Ouch. I’d never considered writing a story about a former villain. But just as David in The Postcard was reader requested, Sammy would be. Sammy is a very strong character and I knew he had to have a strong female lead character, one that wasn’t afraid to stand up to him and keep him under control. He is a leader, an EMT studying to be a paramedic, and a volunteer firefighter. The female lead, Abigail, is thrown into Jamesport without warning. Her step-father takes her to the bus station and sends her away and she doesn’t even know why! When she is met at the bus station by an aunt and uncle she didn’t even know existed, she is thrown into the middle of several mysteries, including barn fires set by arsonists. And she is the main suspect. The whole New Beginnings in Jamesport series, while considered a continuation of The Amish of Jamesport series due to Sammy being the hero, is set around Amish starting over in Jamesport. The second book The Amish Wanderer is about a former resident of Jamesport hitchhiking across the country to get to his Mennonite uncle’s house in Pennsylvania. Silas is desperate to escape from his dysfunctional family for several reasons. But he cannot stay in Jamesport because someone is out to kill him. When he stumbles upon another mystery within hours of his arrival, what choice does he have but to stick around for awhile? God gave me the verses for all three books in the Amish of Jamesport series The Amish Firefighter, The Amish Wanderer and the yet untitled third book (My books all stand alone) before I started writing them, which is unusual. He usually reveals these things slowly to me, as I need to know. The verse for The Amish Firefighter is Isaiah 43:2-4 and the verse for The Amish Wanderer is Romans 8:38-39. The third book’s verse is 2 Corinthians 4:8. It is tentatively titled The Amish Accountant, but most people think accountants are boring, and his real profession is a clockmaker. But The Amish Clockmaker has already been taken by another author. So we shall see what the wonderful Whitaker House team will come up with. It is about another young Amish woman, Lydia, who needs a “safe haven.” So her parents send her to live with her Mennonite aunt and uncle in Jamesport. It doesn’t exactly work out as planned, as the aunt and uncle leave for a foreign mission trip immediately, leaving Lydia acting manager of a gift shop and living in an all electric apartment. Before her aunt leaves, she tells Lydia’s secrets to her best friend. But did she tell all of them or some of them? And the best friend’s son, Caleb (the clockmaker) is acting as accountant for the gift shop. And what about Caleb’s carefully kept secret? When Lydia’s past catches up with her, will it destroy all she’d begun to imagine as she dreamed of starting over in Jamesport? Next after that is The Christmas Challenge which is also set in Jamesport. I don’t have official release dates for The Amish Wanderer or the other books yet. But as soon as I know, I’ll share. Coming next? Who knows? I have two ideas warring for attention—but which one gets told first, I don’t know! I lean toward one, then the other. They both want to be told. And now, I must get back to work. Thank you for visiting today and thank you so much for supporting my books. I do hope you’ll enjoy The Amish Firefighter! Happy Reading! Because of Him, ~ Laura ~

Medical Judgment By Richard L. Mabry, MD

I received this book for no charge from Litfuse Publicity for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Book Description:

Someone is after Dr. Sarah Gordon. They’ve stalked her and set a fire at her home. Trying to recover from the traumatic deaths of her husband and infant daughter is tough enough, but she has no idea what will come next. Her late husband’s best friend and a recovering alcoholic detective are trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late, but both appear to be vying for her affection as well. Sarah finds herself in constant fear as the process plays out.

As the threats on her life continue to escalate, so do the questions: Who is doing this? Why are they after her? And with her only help being unreliable suitors in competition with each other, whom can she really trust?

My Thoughts:

Medical Judgment is the latest medical thriller by Richard L. Mabry, M.D. and it is exciting! I have had the pleasure of reading some of Richard L. Mabry's books and I am so glad I got to read this one. Since I can remember, I have always enjoyed Suspense/Thriller books and I have come to be a huge fan of Medical Thriller/Suspense stores so Richard L. Mabry is one of my must read authors. Richard L. Mabry, M.D. writes with authority about medical procedure, police procedures, hospital policy, dog training, and various elements of crime.  Medical Judgment is a thrilling book that grabbed ahold of me from the start and kept me guessing until the end. I could NOT put this book down. I found the characters in this book very well written, whose lives are messy and everyone, including the Pastor in this book struggled with different things. I truly enjoyed the characters in this book but I really enjoyed Dr. Sarah Gordon's character and her journey. Sarah truly struggled with loss and worked to find her way in the world. Her tough outer exterior was a coping skill but underneath was someone who truly amazing, she didn't give up no matter what she faced. Her journey truly stayed with me. This book really touched on a little bit of everything, Suspense, Loss, Action, Love, and finding Faith in midst of adversity. The lost and found faith in this book really spoke to me, the struggles of the characters throughout including the Pastor of the church really showed how we all struggle no matter who we are or our faith. I found myself laughing in parts of this book, crying in others, and holding my breath through most of it. This story really kept me guessing until the end and weaved a web of deception.  I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense books, you will NOT be disappointed. I look forward to reading more from Richard L. Mabry, M.D.. I give this book 5+ STARS.

Anchor in The Storm: Waves of Freedom Book 2 By Sarah Sundin

I received this book from Litfuse Publicity for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions explained here are my own.

Book Description:

For plucky Lillian Avery, America's entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. The challenges of her new job energize her. But society boy Ensign Archer Vandenberg's attentions only annoy---even if he is her brother's best friend.

During the darkest days of the war, Arch's destroyer hunts German U-boats in vain as the submarines sink dozens of merchant ships along the East Coast. Still shaken by battles at sea, Arch notices his men also struggle with their nerves---and with drowsiness. Could there be a link to the large prescriptions for sedatives Lillian has filled? The two work together to answer that question, but can Arch ever earn Lillian's trust and affection?

Sarah Sundin brings World War II to life, offering readers an intense experience they won't soon forget.

My Thoughts:

Anchor in The Storm is the second book in Sarah Sundin's series, Waves of Freedom, and it is FANTASTIC.  I had the joy of reading the first book in this great series, Through Waters Deep, so having this opportunity was great.  I am a huge fan of Christian Historical Fiction and Sarah Sundin's books.  Sarah Sundin writes with authority about World War II, the world during this time, the military especially the Navy, medical terminology, and pharmacy practises. I learned more about WW II in this book. Sarah Sundin weaves the perfect balance of fact and fiction for her readers.  From the start, this book grabbed ahold of me and kept me guessing until the end, I could not put it down. Being book two, Anchor in The Storm introduced us to new characters but also gave us a deeper look into old friends from the first book. I loved the characters in this book especially Lillian Avery. She is a very strong young woman, looking to make her way in the world. Lillian decided long ago she would never fall in love, that no one could love her due to her disability. She uproots her life to move to Boston to follow her career path of being a pharmacist. I understood her in so many ways, especially in her disability. I found inspiration in her growth as a person to loving herself and opening herself up to God and all he has given her. Plus of course her crime fighting skills. I found myself full of emotion as I read this story from laughing out loud to crying to holding my breath. I found comfort in the faith journeys through this book especially Hebrews 6:19: This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil. This verse helped both Lillian and Arch through their troubles and helped them to find one another. This verse and book is one that will stay with me for a while. A wonderful help through any trials. I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for Book Three. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 5 STARS

The Egyptian Princess: A Story of Hagar By KD Homberg

I received this audiobook for no charge from the author and Celebrate Lit Blogger Program in exchange for my honest review of this audiobook...
