My Thoughts:

The Amish Candy Maker is the latest book in Laura V Hilton's series, The Amish of Mackinac County, and it is fantastic. As a huge fan of Amish fiction, I have had the pleasure of reading
Laura V. Hilton's books and I couldn't wait to read this one. Laura V Hilton writes with authority about The Amish Faith and life, their different communities around the U.S., firefighters and fires, auctioneers, candy making, and taking care of children. From the start of this book until the end I couldn't put this book down. This is the second book in this series and picks up not long after the first book ended, but this book can definitely be read as a stand alone. Laura V. Hilton has written this second book with enough background for those who didn't read the first one, but not to the point that the book lulls for readers of the first book. Laura Hilton puts her readers right there in the thick of the story, I always feel like I am right there in the story. The characters in this story are well written and relatable. I found myself drawn in this story to Agnes Zook. Agnes Zook lost her whole family to the fire that happened in Mackinac County and has been living with the Bishop and his wife, helping care for three children whose father was hurt in the fires. Agnes is different from the other Amish girls. Her character speaks her mind and her imagination is vivid. Her faith has been shaken and she is angry with God. I loved being part of her transformation. This book and series is a must read for anyone who enjoys Amish Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more in this series. I give this book 5+ Stars.

RECIPE FOR FUDGE À LA AGNES ZOOK
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Fudge

1 bag (12 ounces) milk chocolate chips
1 bag (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
2 cans sweetened condensed milk, divided
6 tablespoons butter, divided
20 to 30 miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or six regular-size ones broken into four or five pieces each
For the chocolate layer: Line a greased 8-by-11.5-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
In a double boiler or metal bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, combine milk chocolate chips, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 4 tablespoons butter. Stir until melted and smooth.
Pour into prepared baking dish and allow to cool to room temperature, then move to the refrigerator while preparing next layer.
For the peanut butter layer: In a double boiler or metal bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, combine peanut butter chips, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 2 tablespoons butter. Stir until melted and smooth.
Pour on to the milk chocolate fudge layer and press pieces of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups into the surface. If desired, group candy pieces in a grid-like fashion for easier cutting later.
Allow to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate overnight or until set.
Remove from refrigerator, lift out of the pan by the edges of the parchment paper, and cut into squares, with roughly one miniature peanut butter cup or piece of a cup per square.
Store in the refrigerator.

My Thoughts:

Ellie's Redemption is the latest book in Molly Jebber's series, The Amish Charm Bakery series, and it is very good. I had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series so I was so excited to have the opportunity to read Ellie's Redemption. Ellie comes back to the Amish community in Charm, Ohio after being in the English world. Now she is subject to malicious gossip by other Amish which really doesn't help Ellie's feelings of inadequacy. Molly Jebber shows readers that the things we deal with in the English world does happen in the Amish community. No one is immune to these behaviors. I found the characters relatable, real people dealing with real issues. I definitely could relate best with Ellie. Her feelings of inadequacy and low self esteem really hit home for me. Also being misjudged and hurt by gossip. I found Ellie's faith in God and her friends admirable. I really enjoy Molly Jebber's style of writing. She makes you feel like you are right there in Charm, Ohio. She writes with authority about Charm, Ohio, The Amish, our world in 1912, the dangers of gossip, and finding love. This book can be read as a stand alone. I definitely recommend this book and series to anyone who likes Amish Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 4 STARS.

Ellie’s Surprise Cookies
1 cup shortening 2 cups rolled oats (quick cook)
1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon soda
1 ¼ cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon cinnamon 1 ½ cups chocolate chips
2 eggs 2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt

Sift dry ingredients. Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat until fluffy. Stir in dry ingredients. Add oatmeal, vanilla and chocolate chips. Dough will be crumbly. Spoon a teaspoon of dough at a time on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

My Thoughts:

This Homeward Journey is the latest book in Misty Beller's series, Heart of the Mountain, and it is great! I personally haven't read the previous 4 books but this book is definitely great as a stand alone book. I never felt lost during this book, Misty Beller found a good balance that new readers didn't feel lost but not bogged down with details for those who have read the other books. This is one of the many reasons I enjoyed this book. Misty Beller's writing style really impressed me. I found myself right there traveling with Rachel, experiencing everything she did. The characters are definitely written to be real people in real life situation. I again felt such a connection with Rachel and her journey. Her physical and emotional journey are inspiring. I couldn't put this book down, From start to finish this book held my attention and I felt every emotion portrayed in this story. I personally have the other 4 books on my list of books to read. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more from Misty Beller. I highly recommend this book to anyone how enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 5 STARS.

Misty M. Beller writes romantic mountain stories, set on the 1800s frontier and woven with the truth of God’s love. She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Why Christian Historical Romance? I don’t know about you, but my life can get crazy…busy…chaotic. Historical fiction gives me a haven, allowing me to immerse in a simpler time and place. Add in remote mountain settings—log cabins and horses and snow…what could be better? Sometimes I wish God had let me live a couple centuries ago, but then I remind myself He knew exactly what He was doing. I don’t do well without a shower every day. 😊 And He even lets me go back to that simpler time through stories! If you’re reading this, you probably enjoy immersing yourself in a good book, too. Story can be such a powerful thing! Becoming an intimate part of the characters’ lives, feeling their struggles—the desperation, the elation, the emotions, the love. I enjoy reading and writing Christian fiction because it provides a place where I don’t always have to be concerned about inappropriate language or too-graphic love scenes. It’s a “safe zone” where my imagination can escape, living out exciting times and experiencing God-orchestrated happily-ever-afters—without having to clean-up at the end of the day. Can you relate? My Thoughts:

Chosen People is the latest book by Robert Whitlow and WOW. As a fan of Robert Whitlow, I was excited to have this opportunity to read this book. I found myself learning about religions I had never been exposed to. I love learning about things and this book gave me that opportunity. Robert Whitlow writes with authority on the legal systems of the US and Jerusalem, the state of Georgia and Jerusalem, terrorism, the beliefs of Christians and the Jewish and finding faith. I COULD NOT put this book down once I started it. Robert Whitlow's writing puts you right there in the middle of the worlds he has created. The characters in this book are diverse, dealing with real life struggles. I found myself drawn to Hana and Jakob. They are very different people who find themselves working together and they do it very well. Hana and Jakob endure many events together good and bad. Hana's Christian Beliefs are deep rooted and she is open to sharing. While Jakob is a Jewish man who is the opposite about his beliefs, he really doesn't understand Christianity or the Jewish but as the book progresses, his understanding and belief in God manifests. I have had a few days to process my feelings about this book and I cannot do it the justice deserved. This is one of those books that will stay with me for a LONG time. This book really evoked many of my emotions. I found myself smiling and laughing in some parts, anger, grieving and crying in other parts. I cannot say enough about this book and this author. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Legal Fiction, you will NOT be disappointed. I hoping to see Hana and Jakob again. I can't wait to read more from Robert Whitlow. My Thoughts:

Indivisible is the latest book by Travis Thrasher and it awesome. This book is passed on the screen play by David Evans that will be a movie. All the books I have had the pleasure of reading by Travis Thrasher have been fantastic and Indivisible is my favorite. It seems to change as I read another book by Travis Thrasher. Travis Thrasher writes with authority about being a Chaplin especially in the Army, The US Army policies and procedures, life on a military base, the struggles of both the soldier and the families, marriage, and PTSD. I love the way this book is set up, each chapter is a moment in their lives, points of view switch between Darren and Heather. I have been married for 23 years and we have gone through some big things but knowing God is here with me had helped in many ways. I admire Darren and Heather's will to keep fighting for their marriage and family, definitely shows how strong love is. I found this book very emotional. I could feel the different emotions from happy, scared, angry, and defeated. I cried through many points of this book, that doesn't make it a bad story at all! I absolutely loved this book, this one story will stay with me for a long time. I cannot wait to read more from Travis Thrasher, I know it will be good. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction and/or Love Stories, you will NOT be disappointed. Please check out the information below and the great giveaway.

This book is based on a true story, so we’d love for readers and moviegoers to meet the real Darren and Heather Turner: Darren and Heather Turner both grew up in Georgia, and met in 1999 when Darren was working in campus ministry at the University of Georgia. (Darren is still a Bulldog at heart.) Heather was working as a recruiter for an organization that sends English teachers overseas, and Darren had just returned from a year teaching English in Mongolia when they met. Married that same year, they served another six years together in campus ministry and added three children to their family. Through the husband of a friend of Heather’s, Darren learned that opportunities existed for service as a military chaplain. In 2006, Darren completed seminary, was commissioned in the Army, and deployed almost immediately. Their family’s experiences from this timeframe are the basis of the new movie INDIVISIBLE. My Thoughts:

It's Momplicated is the latest book for both Debbie Alsdorf and Joan Edwards Kay and it is fantastic. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to read and now review this powerful book. Debbie Alsdorf and Joan Edwards Kay write with authority about Mother/Daughter relationships, how this relationship from the beginning shapes your self image and other relationships throughout your life, how to overcome this if necessary and build better relationship. This book spoke to me just from the description because of my relationship as a daughter and as a mother. Even as I reflect on this book, I am reminded of the strained relationship with my own Mom for many, many years and we still have our moments. I am the oldest of 3 children and I always felt like a failure in my Mom's eyes from the time I can remember. Like who I was wasn't what she wanted. I would see my friends with their moms and the relationships and I was confused at first and then envious. This book really has helped me see that it is OK to be me, regardless of what others thinks especially my Mom. I love my Mom and I am seeing that regardless of everything our relationship can improve. On the flip side I see myself as a Mom to my 2 daughters and work very hard to be the Mom they need even if I was flawed in the previous years. It's Momplicated is a book I am planning on rereading because I know there are things I might have missed or needs reinforcement. It's Momplicated is a book for any mother/daughter relationship whether good or bad. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any mother and daughter. I give this book 5+STARS.

About the Authors

Debbie Alsdorf: For the past twenty-five years, through her speaking and writing, Debbie Alsdorf’s mission has been to help women live a better story by leading them to the heart of God’s love and the truth of his Word. Debbie is a biblical lay counselor, a Christian life coach, and the founder of Design4Living Ministries. She and her husband, Ray, have raised a blended family of four adult children. Today Debbie’s favorite role is being a grandma to ten little ones.

Joan Kay Edwards: Joan Edwards Kay is a licensed marriage and family therapist in the East Bay of San Francisco and has been an adjunct professor at Western Seminary. She received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College and her master’s degree from Western Seminary. She is happily married with two adult daughters, four stepdaughters, and five grandchildren.

Mom. Mother. Mommy. What do those words evoke in you? Wonderful memories of home cooked meals? A longing for nurture that was never fully met? A sense of not being enough? Gratitude? Sadness and loss? Anger and resentment? Most women have a complex reaction when asked to think about their mothers–a mix of positive and negative, gratitude and hurt, happy and sad memories. Our relationships with our mothers are unique, rich, and complicated. Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Debbie Alsdorf and Joan Edwards Kay, friends who have written a book together that explores the issue of moms and their profound effect on daughters. It’s Momplicated: Hope and Healing for Imperfect Daughters of Imperfect Mothers releases this September 4^th, 2018. Since every woman is a daughter, this book is for every women. Every daughter receives less-than-perfect programming from her mother. The messages may be about our value, or how to relate to others, or even about how we think about bodies. I (Debbie) grew up with a mother who was cold, distant and unavailable. I have one sister who was in her teens when I was born and married by the time I started school, leaving me to be raised as an only child. I grew up wondering what was wrong with me, “Why didn’t mom want to spend time with me? Why didn’t she hug me and hold me close like other moms did? Why was nothing I did to earn her approval good enough?” I was deeply imprinted with wounds of rejection and carried them through most of my adult life, even though I pasted on a smile, kept trying to do better, and could be the life of any gathering. On the inside, I was sad for as long as I can remember. Through working on this book, I have experienced a phenomenal inner healing, the exposing of lies long held secretly in my heart, and the ability to see the way the enemy of my soul has tried to use the “not enough” belief against me. I am beyond excited for other women to have the courage to own their own story, inviting Jesus to meet them in any points of pain and any relationships that need healing. I (Joan) had a stay-at-home mom who cooked dinner every night, took us to the library and the beach, did art projects with us, and made me feel safe and happy. However, when I was nine years old, my father and then my brother both died of cancer within a year and my relationship with my mother changed. Understandably, she struggled to just hold herself together, but in my young mind I felt abandoned by her. I didn’t have the capacity to deal with all the loss and she didn’t have the strength to help me. I felt emotionally lost and alone. I longed for my mother to comfort me and show me how to overcome my pain. In retrospect, I wish she had shown me faith in a God who could bring hope and meaning to the devastation that had hit our family. But she was not a believer and did her best to stuff away the feelings and soldier on. I was deeply imprinted with the belief, I’m alone and can only depend on myself. As I worked on this project, the root of many of my struggles became clear to me and God has been comforting those young, lonely parts of me with his presence and his love.
